“hope is a good thing maybe even the best of things and good things never die.”-Andy Dufresne

hope you had experienced this quote after watching this movie yesterday or may be the last Sunday or may be while you were upset because of your life’s ups and down and googled about the most feel good or inspirational movies and at the top the result you saw “The Shawshank Redemption”  and why not because in IMDB it has 9.3/10 ratings.

A brief summary of  The Shawshank Redemption:

Pls Skip I know the Plot

In 1947 Portland, Maine, banker Andy Dufresne is guilty of murdering his spouse and her lover, and is sentenced to 2 consecutive life sentences at the Shawshank State Penitentiary.

Andy is befriended by contraband runner, Ellis “Red” redding, an inmate serving a prison term.

Red procures a rock hammer and later an oversized poster of Rita Hayworth for Andy.

Working within the jail laundry, Andy is often mistreated by “The Sisters” and their leader, Bogs.

In 1949, Andy overhears the captain of the guards, byron Hadley, grumbling regarding being taxed on an inheritance, and offers to assist him lawfully shelter the money.

After an assault by the Sisters nearly kills Andy, Hadley beats Bogs severely.

Warden Samuel Norton meets Andy and reassigns him to the jail library to help senior inmate Brooks Hatlen.

Andy’s new job is a pretext for him to start managing money matters for the jail workers.

As time passes, the warden begins exploiting Andy to handle matters for a range of individuals, as well as guards from different prisons and also the warden himself.

In 1954, Brooks is paroled, however cannot suits the outside world after fifty years in jail, and commits suicide by hanging himself.

After his unleash from solitary, Andy explains that hope is what gets him through his time, a thought that Red dismisses.

In 1963, Norton begins exploiting jail labor for construction, profiting by undercutting skillful labor prices and receiving bribes.

He has Andy launder the cash using the alias Randall Stephens.

He is befriended by Andy and Red, and Andy helps him pass his GED examination.

In 1966, Tommy reveals to Red and Andy that an inmate at another jail claimed responsibility for the murders that Andy was guilty.

Andy approaches Norton with this info, however he refuses to pay attention and sends Andy back to confinement when he mentions the cash laundering.

Norton has Hadley murder Tommy under the pretext of an escape attempt.

Andy declines to continue the laundering, however relents after Norton threatens to burn the library, take away Andy’s protection from the guards, and move him to worse conditions.

Andy is discharged from solitary after 2 months, and tells Red of his dream of living in Zihuatanejo, a Mexican coastal city.

Red feels Andy is being delusive, however guarantees Andy that if he’s ever discharged, he will visit a particular grassland close to Buxton, Maine, and retrieve a package Andy buried there.

He worries regarding Andy’s well-being, particularly when he learns Andy asked another inmate to provide him with six feet of rope.

The next day at roll call, the guards notice Andy’s cell empty.

An angry Norton throws a rock at the poster of Raquel Welch hanging on the cell wall, revealing a tunnel that Andy dug with his rock hammer over the last nineteen years.

The previous night, Andy escaped through the tunnel and jail sewerage pipe, using the rope to bring with him Norton’s suit, shoes, and also the ledger containing details of the cash laundering.

While guards hunt for him, Andy poses as Randall Stephens and visits many banks to withdraw the laundered cash, then mails the ledger and proof of the corruption and murders at Shawshank to a local newspaper.

FBI agents arrive at Shawshank and take Hadley into custody, whereas Norton commits suicide to avoid his arrest.

Finally after approval of parole Red struggles to adapt to life outside jail and fears he ne’er can.

Remembering his promise to Andy, he visits Buxton and finds a cache containing cash and a letter asking him to return to Zihuatanejo.

Red violates his parole and travels to Fort Hancock, Texas to cross the border to Mexico, admitting he finally feels hope.On a beach in Zihuatanejo he finds Andy, and also the 2 friends are mirthfully reunited.

Here is what I learned from this movie

  • Hope: Andy was hopeful throughout his sentence term that He will be free one day and He kept on creating the the favorable situation by his work, be it being innocent,a good listener though.
  • Start your work with whatever you have: On first night of his imprisonment he cried but was not broken rather he asked RED to procure a small stone-hammer, which is going to be his only tool for the next 19 years to escape.
  • Being Busy: You might remember his quote,
“Get busy living, or get busy dying….”
  • Do not let the past affect your future: Who will forget the jail experiences after spending 19 years in the jail, but Andy kept on creating the visuals of his future where he will be building a hotel and repair old boats to resale them and live life happily
  • Salvation lies within.
